Indications

Abametapir lotion is used to treat head lice infestation in adults and children aged 6 months and older. It is a single-application treatment applied to dry hair and scalp.

How It Works

Abametapir blocks enzymes called metalloproteinases that lice and their eggs need to survive and hatch. This kills live lice and also stops eggs from developing, so a second treatment is usually not needed.

Dosage and Administration

For external use on the scalp only. Use as directed on the label, usually once: shake well, apply enough lotion to completely cover the dry scalp and hair from roots to tips, leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse off well with warm water. Use the whole bottle only if needed for long hair; throw away any unused lotion. Children must be treated by an adult. Wash hands after use.

Interactions

Abametapir can slow the breakdown of some medicines processed by the liver enzyme CYP3A4 for a short time after use. Avoid taking such medicines for about 2 weeks after treatment unless your doctor advises otherwise. Do not use other lice products at the same time.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to abametapir or any ingredient of the lotion.
  • Children under 6 months of age, because of the benzyl alcohol content and higher absorption.

Side Effects

Common: redness, itching, burning or stinging of the scalp, rash, dandruff-like flaking, hair colour change and eye irritation if it gets in the eyes.

Get urgent medical help for swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or a severe skin reaction.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is little information in pregnancy; use only if the doctor advises. Breastfeeding mothers should avoid nursing for about 2 weeks after use, or ask the doctor; expressed milk during this time should be thrown away.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Keep away from the eyes; rinse with water if contact occurs.
  • Do not swallow; keep away from young children.
  • Wash bedding, combs and hats in hot water and check other family members.

Overdose

If swallowed, especially by a child, get medical help or contact a poison centre straight away.

Therapeutic Class

Pediculicide (anti-lice agent), topical.

Storage

Store below 30°C, away from light and out of the reach of children. Do not freeze.
