Indications
Abhayarista (Abhayarishta) is a classical Ayurvedic liquid preparation made mainly from Haritaki (Terminalia chebula, called Abhaya) with other herbs such as raisins, Vidanga and fennel, fermented with jaggery. It is traditionally used for piles, constipation, gas and bloating, poor digestion and difficulty passing urine. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited.
How It Works
Haritaki has a mild laxative effect that softens stools and eases bowel movements, which is thought to reduce straining and help piles. The other herbs are traditionally used to reduce gas, improve appetite and support digestion. Like other arishtas, it contains a small amount of alcohol produced naturally during fermentation, which helps preserve it.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic practitioner, usually after meals mixed with an equal amount of water. Do not exceed the label amount. Use for limited periods unless advised otherwise.
Interactions
- Because it contains natural alcohol, avoid with Metronidazole, Tinidazole and other medicines that react with alcohol, and with sedatives.
- Its laxative effect may reduce absorption of other medicines taken at the same time; keep a gap of about 2 hours.
- People taking medicines for diabetes should note that it contains sugar from jaggery.
Contraindications
- Diarrhoea, inflammatory bowel disease or intestinal blockage.
- Pregnancy.
- People who must avoid alcohol, including those with liver disease or alcohol dependence.
- Young children, unless advised by a practitioner.
Side Effects
Loose stools, stomach cramps and a burning feeling in the stomach can occur, especially at higher amounts.
Get urgent medical help if you have heavy rectal bleeding, black or tarry stools, severe stomach pain, persistent diarrhoea with dizziness or weakness, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Avoid during pregnancy, as laxative herbs may stimulate the womb and the product contains alcohol. Avoid during breastfeeding unless a doctor advises it.
Precautions and Warnings
- Bleeding from the rectum should be checked by a doctor, as it can have serious causes.
- People with diabetes should consult a doctor because of the sugar content.
- It may cause mild drowsiness in some people because of its alcohol content.
- Increase fibre and fluids in the diet as well.
Overdose
Too much can cause diarrhoea, stomach cramps and dehydration. Seek medical advice if a large amount has been taken, especially by a child.
