Indications
Adhatoda vasica (also called Malabar nut, or Basak in Bangla) is a medicinal plant whose leaves are used in herbal, Ayurvedic and Unani preparations. It is traditionally used to relieve cough, loosen thick mucus, and ease symptoms of colds, bronchitis and mild breathing difficulty. It is often found in herbal cough syrups. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it is not a substitute for medical treatment of asthma or serious chest infections.
How It Works
The leaves contain natural alkaloids, mainly vasicine and vasicinone. Laboratory and early studies suggest these may help open the airways (a mild bronchodilator effect), thin mucus so it is easier to cough up (an expectorant effect), and calm cough and inflammation. The strength of these effects in people has not been well established.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. Herbal syrups are usually taken a few times a day, measured with the cup or spoon provided. Do not take more than the recommended amount, and do not use for long periods without advice. See a doctor if a cough lasts more than 2 weeks or is getting worse.
Interactions
Information is limited. Because it may affect blood sugar and the uterus, use with caution alongside diabetes medicines and avoid with medicines that stimulate the womb, such as Oxytocin or Misoprostol. Many herbal syrups also contain other herbs, honey or sugar, so check all ingredients. Tell your doctor about any herbal products you take, especially before surgery.
Contraindications
Do not use if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant, or if you are allergic to Adhatoda vasica or any other ingredient of the product.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated in normal amounts. Some people may have nausea, vomiting, stomach upset or diarrhoea, especially with high doses. Allergic skin reactions are possible.
Get urgent medical help for signs of a serious allergic reaction (swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing), or if a pregnant woman who has taken it has bleeding or cramps. Also seek medical care for high fever, chest pain, coughing up blood or severe breathlessness, as these need proper medical treatment.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use in pregnancy. Vasicine, an alkaloid in the plant, can stimulate contractions of the womb and has been linked to miscarriage. There is not enough information on safety during breastfeeding, so it is best avoided unless a doctor advises.
Precautions and Warnings
- Not suitable for young children unless a doctor or registered practitioner advises a child-specific product and dose.
- People with diabetes should check the sugar content of syrups and monitor blood sugar.
- Herbal products vary in strength and quality; buy from a reliable source.
- Do not use instead of prescribed inhalers or antibiotics.
Overdose
Large amounts may cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. In pregnancy, overdose is particularly risky. Seek medical advice if a large amount is taken.
