Indications
Adrenochrome monosemicarbazone (also called carbazochrome) is used to help control bleeding from small blood vessels (capillaries). Examples include nosebleeds, bleeding gums, bleeding after tooth extraction or minor surgery, blood in the urine, heavy menstrual bleeding and bleeding linked to fragile capillaries. It is a supportive treatment and does not replace finding and treating the cause of bleeding.
How It Works
It is a substance related to an oxidation product of adrenaline. It is thought to strengthen the walls of small blood vessels and reduce their leakiness, which helps small bleeds stop. It does not act on blood clotting factors and does not raise blood pressure.
Dosage and Administration
Tablets are taken by mouth as prescribed or as directed on the label, usually a few times a day for a short period. The injection is given into a muscle or vein by a doctor or nurse at a dose set by the doctor.
Interactions
No major interactions are well known. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take, especially blood thinners such as Warfarin, Aspirin or Clopidogrel, since these may make bleeding worse and need separate assessment.
Contraindications
- Allergy to adrenochrome monosemicarbazone or any ingredient of the product.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Possible effects include stomach upset, loss of appetite, nausea, rash or itching. Urine may turn orange or reddish, which is harmless. Injections may cause pain at the injection site.
Get urgent medical help if bleeding is heavy or does not stop, if there is vomiting of blood or black stools, or if signs of a severe allergic reaction appear, such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been well studied. Use only if a doctor advises it. Any bleeding in pregnancy needs prompt medical assessment.
Precautions and Warnings
- Bleeding can be a sign of a serious problem: see a doctor to find the cause.
- It is not effective for major bleeding from large vessels or for clotting disorders such as haemophilia.
- Do not use for longer than advised.
Overdose
Serious toxicity is not expected, but if a large amount is taken, contact a doctor for advice and supportive care.
