What It Is Used For

Albendazole treats worm infections: roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, threadworm (pinworm), some tapeworms, and, as longer courses under a doctor, hydatid cysts and neurocysticercosis.

How to Take It

Common worms in adults and children over 2 years: a single 400 mg dose, chewed or swallowed. Children 1 to 2 years: usually 200 mg. Threadworm often needs a second dose after 2 to 3 weeks, and the whole household may need treating at the same time. Longer courses for other infections are taken with food as the doctor sets.

Who Should Not Take It

Do not take it if you are allergic to albendazole or similar medicines, or if you are pregnant.

Side Effects

Single doses are usually well tolerated: mild stomach pain, nausea, diarrhoea, headache or dizziness. Long courses can affect the liver and blood counts, so blood tests are needed.

Precautions

Women on long courses should avoid pregnancy during treatment and for 1 month after. Wash hands and cut nails short to prevent threadworm coming back.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Do not take it in pregnancy. Ask your doctor before using it while breastfeeding.

Interactions

Carbamazepine, phenytoin and phenobarbital can make it less effective. Dexamethasone and praziquantel can raise its levels.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, out of the reach of children.
