Indications

Algae Calcium is a calcium supplement made from the skeletons of red sea algae (such as Lithothamnion). Besides calcium, it naturally contains magnesium and small amounts of other minerals. It is used to prevent and treat calcium deficiency, to support bone health and help prevent osteoporosis (thin, weak bones), and to meet extra calcium needs during growth, pregnancy, breastfeeding and older age. Many products combine it with vitamin D3, and some with other vitamins or minerals.

How It Works

Calcium is the main mineral in bones and teeth and is also needed for muscles, nerves, heart rhythm and blood clotting. When diet does not provide enough, the body takes calcium from the bones. Supplementing calcium, especially with vitamin D, which helps the gut absorb it, keeps bones strong and reduces bone loss. Plant based algae calcium is said to be well absorbed, although strong comparative evidence is limited.

Dosage and Administration

Use as directed on the label or by your doctor. Adults generally need about 1,000 mg to 1,200 mg of calcium a day from food and supplements combined; supplements usually provide 500 mg to 600 mg elemental calcium once or twice a day. Take with or after food and a glass of water. Splitting doses above 500 mg improves absorption. Children’s products should be used only as directed for their age.

Interactions

Calcium reduces absorption of Tetracycline and Doxycycline, Ciprofloxacin and other quinolones, Levothyroxine, Iron, Zinc, Alendronate and other bisphosphonates; take these at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after calcium. Thiazide diuretics may raise blood calcium. High calcium can increase the risk of heart rhythm problems with Digoxin.

Contraindications

  • High blood calcium or high calcium in the urine.
  • Calcium containing kidney stones or severe kidney failure.
  • Allergy to any ingredient (including seaweed or iodine sensitivity, if relevant to the product).

Side Effects

Constipation, wind, bloating and mild stomach upset are the most common effects. Too much calcium over time can raise blood calcium and increase the risk of kidney stones.

Get urgent medical help if you have severe constipation with abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, extreme thirst, confusion, severe weakness or an irregular heartbeat, which may be signs of very high calcium, or severe pain in the side or back with blood in the urine.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Calcium supplements at recommended doses are safe and often advised in pregnancy and breastfeeding, especially when dietary intake is low. Do not exceed the recommended amount, and tell your doctor about other supplements you take.

Precautions and Warnings

Count calcium from all sources (food, milk, other supplements) to avoid taking too much. Use with care in people with kidney disease, a history of kidney stones, sarcoidosis or long term bed rest. Keep away from children, as overdosing with vitamin D containing products can be harmful.

Overdose

Large amounts may cause nausea, vomiting, constipation, thirst, frequent urination and confusion due to high calcium. Stop taking it and contact a doctor.
