Indications
Allium cepa (onion bulb extract) is used in topical gels and creams to improve the look of scars. It is applied to healed scars from surgery, injuries, burns and acne, and to raised scars (hypertrophic scars and keloids), to help make them softer, flatter, smoother and less red. It is often combined with other skin-care ingredients such as Heparin or Allantoin.
How It Works
Onion extract contains natural compounds such as quercetin that may calm inflammation and slow down the overactive scar-forming cells (fibroblasts) that lay down too much collagen. This may help a scar remodel more evenly over time. Evidence from studies is mixed: some show modest improvement, others show little difference compared with simple moisturising or silicone products.
Dosage and Administration
Use only on closed, fully healed skin, usually after stitches are removed and the wound has closed. Gently massage a thin layer into the scar 2 to 3 times a day, or as directed on the label. Treatment usually needs to continue for several weeks to months: new scars may need around 2 to 3 months, and older scars longer.
Interactions
No drug interactions are known. Avoid applying other creams to the same area at the same time unless advised.
Contraindications
- Allergy to onion or any ingredient of the product
- Open wounds, raw or broken skin
Side Effects
- Mild itching, redness or a stinging feeling where it is applied
- Allergic skin reaction (rare)
Get urgent medical help if you develop a spreading rash, blistering, swelling of the face or lips, or difficulty breathing after use.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Very little is absorbed through the skin and topical use is generally considered low risk. Ask a doctor before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and do not apply it to the breast area while breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings
- For external use only; avoid the eyes, mouth and mucous membranes.
- Protect the treated scar from strong sunlight, cold and rubbing, as these can darken or worsen scars.
- Large, painful or fast-growing scars should be checked by a doctor.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with topical use. If swallowed in a large amount, it may cause stomach upset; seek medical advice if worried.
