Indications

Amalaki Rasayana is a classical Ayurvedic preparation made mainly from amla (Indian gooseberry, Emblica officinalis) fruit, processed with amla juice and sometimes ghee, honey or sugar. It is traditionally used to relieve acidity, heartburn and indigestion, as a general rejuvenating tonic (rasayana), and to support immunity, hair and skin health. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it should not replace treatment for ulcers or other diagnosed stomach disease.

How It Works

Amla is naturally rich in vitamin C and plant antioxidants such as tannins and polyphenols, which help protect cells from damage. In Ayurveda it is described as cooling and soothing for the stomach, which is why it is used for acidity. Some small studies suggest amla may help protect the stomach lining and support digestion, but more research is needed.

Dosage and Administration

Take by mouth as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic practitioner, usually with water, milk or honey. Do not exceed the recommended dose.

Interactions

  • Amla may slow blood clotting slightly; use with care with Warfarin, Aspirin, Clopidogrel and other blood thinners.
  • It may lower blood sugar; people taking diabetes medicines should monitor their sugar.
  • Leave a gap of 2 hours between this product and other medicines.

Contraindications

Do not use if allergic to amla or any ingredient. People with diabetes should check whether the product contains sugar or honey and ask their doctor before use. Avoid in bleeding disorders unless advised.

Side Effects

Generally well tolerated. Some people may get loose stools, mild stomach upset or, rarely, increased acidity.

Get urgent medical help if you have severe stomach pain, vomiting blood, black stools, unusual bleeding or bruising, or signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Amla eaten as food is considered safe. There is not enough information on medicinal preparations in pregnancy or breastfeeding; ask a doctor before use.

Precautions and Warnings

  • See a doctor if acidity lasts more than 2 weeks, keeps coming back, or comes with weight loss, difficulty swallowing, vomiting or black stools.
  • Stop 2 weeks before planned surgery.
  • Buy from a reliable manufacturer; some Ayurvedic products have been found to contain heavy metals.

Overdose

Large amounts may cause diarrhoea and stomach discomfort. Get medical help if a large amount has been taken, especially by a child.

Therapeutic Class

Ayurvedic herbal preparation (rasayana, antacid and digestive tonic).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light, with the container tightly closed and out of the reach of children.
