Indications
Ambergris (anbar in Unani) is a rare, waxy substance formed in the gut of sperm whales and found floating in the sea or washed ashore. In Unani medicine very small amounts are used in costly compound preparations. Traditionally it has been used as a tonic for the heart, brain and nerves, for general weakness, low mood and poor memory, and as a sexual tonic for men. Scientific evidence for these uses is very limited.
How It Works
Ambergris contains a fatty substance called ambrein and related fragrant compounds. Animal studies suggest ambrein may have mild effects on sexual behaviour and on pain and inflammation, but this has not been shown in people. In Unani theory it is described as warming and strengthening the vital organs.
Dosage and Administration
Use only as part of a registered product, as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. It is present in tiny amounts and should not be taken on its own.
Interactions
No well documented interactions are known. Products containing it often include other strong herbs or minerals, so tell your doctor about any such product, especially if you take heart medicines, blood pressure medicines or medicines for erectile problems such as Sildenafil.
Contraindications
Do not use it if you are allergic to any ingredient in the product. Not for children.
Side Effects
Side effects are not well described because of the small amounts used. Some people may have stomach upset or a feeling of heat. Allergic reactions are possible.
Get urgent medical help if you have chest pain, a fast or irregular heartbeat, fainting, or swelling of the face, lips or throat or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
There is no safety information for pregnancy or breastfeeding. Do not use it during these times.
Precautions and Warnings
Heart symptoms, depression, memory loss and sexual problems need proper medical assessment. Because genuine ambergris is rare and expensive, some products may be adulterated. Trade in whale products is restricted in some countries. Avoid unregistered tonics that promise instant sexual effects, as some contain hidden prescription drugs.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely from registered products. If a large amount of a product has been swallowed, or a child has taken it, contact a doctor.
