Indications

Amorolfine is an antifungal medicine used mainly as a nail lacquer (a medicated nail polish) to treat fungal nail infection (onychomycosis) that affects only part of the nail and does not reach the nail base. A cream form is used in some countries for fungal skin infections such as ringworm, athlete’s foot and jock itch.

How It Works

Amorolfine blocks two steps in the making of ergosterol, a substance fungi need for their cell walls. Without it the fungal cells are damaged and die. The lacquer forms a film on the nail that slowly releases the medicine into the nail plate.

Dosage and Administration

Nail lacquer (5%): apply to the affected nails once or twice a week. Before each use, gently file the infected part of the nail, clean it with the cleaning pad provided, then paint on the lacquer and let it dry for a few minutes. Use a new file for healthy nails. Treatment usually lasts about 6 months for fingernails and 9 to 12 months for toenails. Cream: apply a thin layer once daily to the affected skin, as directed. Do not stop early even if the nail looks better.

Interactions

Very little of the medicine reaches the blood, so interactions with tablets are not expected. Do not use ordinary nail varnish or artificial nails over the treated nails during treatment.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are allergic to Amorolfine or any ingredient in the product.

Side Effects

  • Mild burning, itching or redness of the skin around the nail.
  • Nail discolouration or brittle, broken nails (this may also be due to the infection).
  • Rarely, contact allergy with rash.

Get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Experience in pregnancy and breastfeeding is limited. Use only if your doctor advises it.

Precautions and Warnings

See a doctor before use if the infection affects the nail base, many nails, or if you have diabetes, poor circulation or a weak immune system, as you may need tablets instead. Keep away from the eyes, ears and mouth. Wear gloves when using solvents. The lacquer is flammable; keep it away from flames. Not usually recommended for children.

Overdose

Overdose is unlikely with nail or skin use. If swallowed, rinse the mouth and seek medical advice.

Therapeutic Class

Topical antifungal (morpholine antifungal).

Storage

Store below 30°C, keep the bottle tightly closed, away from heat, flames and light, and out of the reach of children.
