Anhydrous Lanolin

Indications

Anhydrous Lanolin is a purified, water-free wax obtained from sheep’s wool. It is used as an emollient (skin softener) and base ingredient in creams, ointments, barrier creams for nappy rash, lip balms and nipple creams. On its own, highly purified lanolin is used to soothe and protect dry, cracked skin, chapped lips and sore or cracked nipples during breastfeeding.

How It Works

Lanolin forms a soft, protective layer on the skin that slows water loss and keeps the skin moist, helping cracks heal. It can hold a large amount of water, so it helps creams and ointments mix well and spread easily. It also helps protect irritated skin from moisture and friction, for example under a nappy.

Dosage and Administration

For external use only. Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin as often as needed, or as directed on the product label. For sore nipples, a small amount of purified medical-grade lanolin is applied after each feed; it does not usually need to be removed before the next feed, but follow the product directions. When lanolin is an ingredient in another medicine, follow the directions for that product.

Interactions

No known interactions with medicines taken by mouth. Applying it over other skin medicines may change how much of them is absorbed; ask a pharmacist if you use other creams on the same area.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to lanolin or wool alcohols.
  • Do not apply to deep wounds, infected skin or serious burns unless a doctor advises.

Side Effects

Lanolin is usually well tolerated. Some people develop an allergic skin reaction (contact dermatitis) with redness, itching or a rash, especially those with eczema or leg ulcers. Modern highly purified grades cause allergy less often.

Stop using it and get urgent medical help if you develop widespread rash, swelling of the face, lips or eyes, or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Lanolin is not absorbed into the body in meaningful amounts and is considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Purified lanolin is commonly used on the nipples during breastfeeding; use a product made for this purpose.

Precautions and Warnings

  • For external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes.
  • Test on a small area first if you have sensitive skin or a history of allergy to wool or skin creams.
  • If a skin problem gets worse or does not improve within a week, see a doctor.
  • Greasy products can make flooring and bath surfaces slippery.

Overdose

Overdose is not expected with use on the skin. If a large amount is swallowed by a child, it may cause a mild upset stomach; contact a doctor or poison centre if there are any symptoms.

Therapeutic Class

Emollient and ointment base (pharmaceutical excipient).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct light, with the lid tightly closed, out of the reach of children.
