Indications
Apis mellifica is a homeopathic preparation made from the honey bee. In homeopathy it is traditionally used for conditions with swelling, redness, stinging or burning pain. In skin creams it is combined with other homeopathic ingredients and traditionally used to ease burning, tingling and stinging pain in the feet and legs, such as the nerve discomfort some people with diabetes experience. Scientific evidence for homeopathic remedies is limited, and it does not treat the underlying nerve damage or diabetes.
How It Works
Homeopathy is based on the idea that a substance which causes symptoms in large amounts can, in very diluted form, help similar symptoms. The bee material is diluted many times during preparation. There is no proven scientific explanation for how such dilutions work.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. For a cream, wash and dry the area, then gently rub a thin layer into the affected skin, usually a few times a day. Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds or ulcers. Wash your hands after use.
Interactions
No significant interactions with other medicines are known for topical homeopathic preparations. Keep taking your diabetes and other prescribed medicines as advised by your doctor.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to bee stings, honey bee products or any ingredient of the product.
- Broken, infected or ulcerated skin at the area of use.
Side Effects
Side effects are uncommon. Local redness, itching or rash can occur, especially in people sensitive to bee products. Stop using it if irritation develops.
Get urgent medical help if you notice signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as widespread hives, swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing. People with diabetes should also see a doctor promptly for any foot wound, blister, colour change or new numbness.
Pregnancy and Lactation
There is little information on use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use only if a doctor or registered practitioner advises it, and avoid applying it to the breast area when breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings
Burning or tingling feet can have many causes, including diabetes, vitamin deficiency and circulation problems, so get a medical check. Do not stop prescribed treatment in favour of homeopathy. Avoid contact with eyes and mouth. Check your feet daily if you have diabetes.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with a homeopathic cream. If a large amount is swallowed, especially by a child, rinse the mouth and contact a doctor.
Therapeutic Class
