Indications

Arabinoxylan (rice bran arabinoxylan compound) is a dietary supplement made from rice bran that has been treated with enzymes from shiitake mushrooms. It is promoted to support the immune system, and is often taken by people during or after cancer treatment, or when they feel run down, alongside their usual medical care. Scientific evidence is limited and it is not a treatment or cure for cancer or any disease.

How It Works

Arabinoxylan is a type of plant fibre (a complex sugar). Small studies suggest it may increase the activity of natural killer (NK) cells and other parts of the immune system that help fight infections and abnormal cells. It may also act as a prebiotic, feeding helpful gut bacteria. How much this helps in real life is not yet clear.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a doctor. It comes as powder sachets or tablets; powder can be mixed with water, juice or soft food. Some products recommend a higher starting amount for the first weeks followed by a lower maintenance amount.

Interactions

Because it may stimulate the immune system, check with a doctor before using it with immunosuppressant medicines such as Ciclosporin, Tacrolimus or steroids, or during chemotherapy or immunotherapy. Always tell your cancer team about any supplements you take.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to rice, mushrooms or any ingredient of the product
  • Organ transplant recipients and people on immunosuppressants, unless their specialist agrees

Side Effects

  • Generally well tolerated
  • Mild bloating, wind, loose stools or stomach discomfort

Get urgent medical help if you develop a rash with swelling of the face or throat or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is not enough safety information for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so it is best avoided unless a doctor advises it.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Do not stop or delay prescribed medical treatment in favour of this supplement.
  • Ask your doctor before use if you have an autoimmune disease.
  • Supplements are not checked for effectiveness in the same way as medicines.

Overdose

No serious overdose effects are known. Very large amounts may cause stomach upset or diarrhoea.

Therapeutic Class

Dietary supplement (immune-support fibre, plant polysaccharide).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep sachets or the container tightly closed.
