Indications
Aravindasav (Aravindasava) is a classical Ayurvedic liquid tonic, mainly made from lotus (aravinda) and many other herbs that are naturally fermented. It is traditionally given to children to support general health, growth, appetite and digestion, and to help with weakness, poor weight gain and recovery after illness. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it should not replace medical assessment of a child who is not growing or gaining weight.
How It Works
As an asava, its herbs are fermented in a sugar solution, which produces a small amount of natural alcohol that helps extract and preserve the plant compounds. In Ayurvedic theory the formulation strengthens digestion and builds body tissues and strength. Its effects have not been well studied in modern clinical trials.
Dosage and Administration
Give by mouth as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic practitioner, usually after meals, often mixed with an equal amount of water. The dose for children depends on age; follow the label exactly. Do not exceed the stated dose.
Interactions
- It contains a small amount of natural alcohol; avoid combining with Metronidazole, Tinidazole or other medicines that react with alcohol.
- It contains sugar, which may affect blood sugar control in people with diabetes.
- Tell your doctor about any regular medicines the child takes.
Contraindications
Do not use if allergic to any ingredient. Avoid in people with diabetes unless a doctor advises it, and in people with liver disease or who must avoid alcohol completely. Not for infants unless a practitioner advises it.
Side Effects
Generally well tolerated at the labelled dose. Some children may get mild stomach upset or loose stools.
Get urgent medical help if the child has unusual sleepiness, vomiting that does not stop, or signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
This product is mainly intended for children. Because it contains natural alcohol, it is not recommended in pregnancy. Ask a doctor before use while breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings
- See a doctor if a child is not gaining weight, has ongoing poor appetite, diarrhoea, fever or developmental delay.
- Brush teeth after use, as the syrup contains sugar.
- Buy from a reliable manufacturer.
- Keep the bottle out of reach so a child cannot drink a large amount.
Overdose
A large amount may cause drowsiness, vomiting and, in young children, low blood sugar because of the alcohol content. Get medical help straight away if a child drinks a large amount.
