Indications
Arq Lahsun is a traditional Unani distillate (arq means a liquid made by distilling herbs in water) of garlic (Allium sativum). It is traditionally used to support heart and circulation health, for example as an aid in mildly raised cholesterol and blood pressure, and for gas, indigestion and cough. Scientific studies on garlic suggest small benefits for cholesterol and blood pressure, but it does not replace prescribed treatment.
How It Works
Garlic contains sulphur compounds such as allicin and its breakdown products. These are thought to relax blood vessels, slightly reduce cholesterol production and make blood platelets less sticky. How much of these compounds a distillate contains can vary.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner, usually after meals. Shake the bottle before use and measure each dose with the cup provided.
Interactions
Garlic may increase the risk of bleeding with blood thinners such as Warfarin, Aspirin, Clopidogrel or Rivaroxaban. It may add to the effect of blood pressure and diabetes medicines. Garlic can lower the levels of some HIV medicines such as Saquinavir, and may affect Isoniazid and Cyclosporine; ask a doctor if you take any of these.
Contraindications
- Allergy to garlic, onion or related plants.
- Bleeding disorders, or within 7 to 10 days before planned surgery or dental extraction.
- Children, unless a practitioner advises it.
Side Effects
Common effects include garlic breath and body odour, heartburn, stomach upset, gas and nausea. Allergic reactions and increased bleeding (for example easy bruising or nosebleeds) are uncommon.
Get urgent medical help if you have unusual or heavy bleeding, blood in the urine or stool, black stools, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Garlic in normal food is safe. Concentrated garlic products should be avoided during pregnancy, especially near delivery, because of the bleeding risk, and during breastfeeding unless a doctor advises otherwise.
Precautions and Warnings
Do not stop or reduce prescribed medicines for blood pressure, cholesterol or heart disease. Tell your doctor or dentist that you use garlic products before any operation. People with stomach ulcers or reflux may find their symptoms worse.
Overdose
Large amounts may cause stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and an increased tendency to bleed. If a large amount is swallowed, especially by a child, get medical advice.
Therapeutic Class
