Indications
Ashoka (Saraca asoca) is a tree whose dried bark is one of the best known herbs in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for women’s health. It is traditionally used for heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, painful periods, irregular periods, white vaginal discharge and as a general uterine tonic. It is often combined with other herbs in women’s health products. Scientific evidence is limited, with some small studies and many laboratory studies.
How It Works
Ashoka bark contains tannins, flavonoids and other plant compounds. Tannins have an astringent effect (they tighten tissues and may reduce bleeding), and studies suggest the bark may act on the muscle of the womb and the lining of the uterus. It may also have mild anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Its exact action in people is not well established.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic or Unani practitioner. It is usually taken once or twice a day with water after meals, often for one to three menstrual cycles. Do not exceed the stated dose.
Interactions
- Hormonal medicines, including birth control pills and hormone treatment: the bark is thought to have some hormone-like effects; ask a doctor.
- Blood thinners such as Warfarin: effects on bleeding are not known; use only with medical advice.
- Tannins may reduce the absorption of iron supplements and some other medicines if taken at the same time; take them a few hours apart.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and herbal products you use.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy or suspected pregnancy.
- Allergy to Ashoka.
- Children, unless advised by a practitioner.
Side Effects
Ashoka bark is usually well tolerated. Some people may have constipation, stomach discomfort, nausea or loss of appetite.
Get urgent medical help if you have very heavy bleeding with dizziness or fainting, severe stomach or pelvic pain, or signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use during pregnancy, because herbs that act on the womb may cause harm. Its safety during breastfeeding is not known; avoid unless a doctor advises it.
Precautions and Warnings
- Heavy or irregular bleeding needs a medical check to rule out causes such as fibroids, polyps, hormone problems, anaemia or cancer, especially after age 40 or after menopause.
- Bleeding after menopause must always be checked by a doctor.
- Ashoka is a threatened tree, and other barks are sometimes sold in its place; buy only registered products.
Overdose
There is little information on overdose. Large amounts may cause constipation, nausea and stomach pain. If a large amount has been taken, or a child has swallowed it, contact a doctor or the nearest hospital and take the pack with you.
