Indications

Asparagus here refers to the root of medicinal asparagus species, mainly Asparagus racemosus (Shatavari, known in Bangla as Shatamuli) and related species used in Unani medicine. It is an ingredient in Unani compound tonics, such as date based majoon and herbal powders, traditionally used for general weakness, male sexual weakness and involuntary loss of semen, for women’s reproductive health, and to support breast milk. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited.

How It Works

The root contains saponins (called shatavarins), mucilage and other plant compounds. Tradition describes it as nourishing, cooling and strengthening for the reproductive organs. Laboratory and small human studies suggest possible mild hormone like, antioxidant and stomach soothing effects, but these are not proven.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani or Ayurvedic practitioner. Powders are often taken with milk or water, and majoons are taken by mouth, usually after meals.

Interactions

  • Asparagus may increase urine output; take care with diuretics such as Furosemide, and with Lithium, whose levels may change.
  • It may add to the effect of diabetes medicines; monitor blood sugar.
  • Tell your doctor about all medicines and herbal products you take, including hormone treatments.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to asparagus, onion, garlic or related plants, or to any ingredient.
  • Hormone sensitive conditions such as breast cancer, unless a doctor agrees.
  • Children, unless advised by a practitioner.

Side Effects

It is usually well tolerated. Some people may have stomach upset, loose stools, weight gain or allergic skin reactions. Date based majoons are high in sugar.

Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction (swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, widespread rash), or severe stomach pain.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Shatavari is traditionally used to support breast milk, but its safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been properly studied. Do not use in pregnancy, and use while breastfeeding only on a doctor’s advice.

Precautions and Warnings

  • People with diabetes should check the sugar content of majoons.
  • People with kidney problems or swelling (oedema) should ask a doctor before use.
  • Sexual or fertility problems may have medical causes; see a doctor for proper assessment.

Overdose

Taking too much may cause stomach upset and diarrhoea. Seek medical advice if a large amount has been taken, especially by a child.
