Indications

Astaxanthin is a nutritional supplement. It is a natural red-orange pigment (a carotenoid) found in microalgae, salmon and shrimp. It is taken as an antioxidant and is promoted for skin health, eye strain, exercise recovery, heart health and fertility support. Research is still limited, so it should not replace any prescribed treatment.

How It Works

Astaxanthin is a strong antioxidant. It helps neutralise free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage cells, and may reduce inflammation.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: usually 4 to 12 mg a day, or as the doctor advises. Take with a meal that contains some fat, as this improves absorption. Swallow the capsule whole. Not for children unless a doctor advises.

Interactions

No major interactions are well established. As a precaution, tell your doctor if you take blood thinners, blood pressure medicines or hormone treatments, as astaxanthin may have mild effects on these.

Contraindications

Allergy to astaxanthin, to the source it is made from (such as algae or shellfish) or to any other ingredient of the product.

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated. Some people notice reddish-coloured stools, mild stomach discomfort or, with high doses over a long time, a slight orange tint to the skin.

Get urgent medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is not enough safety information for use in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid unless your doctor advises it.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Supplements are not a substitute for a balanced diet or prescribed medicines.
  • Check with your doctor first if you have a long-term illness or take regular medicines.
  • Do not take more than the recommended amount.

Overdose

Taking too much is unlikely to be dangerous but may cause stomach upset. Seek medical advice if a child swallows a large amount.

Therapeutic Class

Antioxidant (carotenoid) nutritional supplement.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
