Indications
Balarista is a traditional Ayurvedic fermented herbal liquid (arishta) made mainly from Bala (Sida cordifolia) and Ashwagandha, with other herbs. In Ayurveda it is traditionally used as a tonic for:
- General weakness, tiredness and slow recovery after illness
- Joint and muscle aches, stiffness and nerve-related pains described in Ayurveda as “vata” disorders
- Poor appetite and low energy
Scientific evidence for these uses is limited. It is not a cure for arthritis, nerve disease or any serious illness and should not replace medical treatment.
How It Works
Balarista is made by fermenting herbal decoctions with jaggery and flowers that start natural fermentation, which produces a small amount of self-generated alcohol that helps extract and preserve the herbal ingredients. Bala and Ashwagandha are traditionally regarded as strengthening, nourishing and soothing to the nerves and muscles. Bala contains small amounts of ephedrine-like alkaloids, which may have a mild stimulant effect.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic practitioner. It is usually taken after meals, mixed with an equal amount of water. Do not exceed the label dose and do not use for long periods without advice. Not recommended for children unless a practitioner advises it.
Interactions
Because Balarista contains alcohol, avoid taking it with Metronidazole, Tinidazole, sedatives, sleeping tablets or other medicines that react with alcohol. The ephedrine-like alkaloids in Bala may add to the effects of decongestants, stimulants and some antidepressants (MAO inhibitors), and may raise blood pressure or heart rate. Ashwagandha may add to the effects of sedatives, thyroid medicines and medicines that lower blood sugar or blood pressure. Tell your doctor about all herbal products you take.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Children, unless a practitioner advises it
- People who must avoid alcohol, including those with alcohol dependence or liver disease
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart rhythm problems, overactive thyroid or severe anxiety
- Known allergy to any ingredient
Side Effects
Side effects are uncommon at label doses but may include:
- Stomach upset, acidity or loose stools
- Restlessness, sleeplessness or fast heartbeat (from the ephedrine-like content)
- Drowsiness in some people
- Rise in blood sugar because of the sugar content
Get urgent medical help if you have chest pain, a very fast or irregular heartbeat, severe headache, yellowing of the eyes or skin, or signs of allergy such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It contains alcohol and herbs whose safety in pregnancy and in breastfed babies has not been established.
Precautions and Warnings
- Contains alcohol and sugar: people with diabetes, liver disease or who avoid alcohol for health or religious reasons should take note.
- May cause drowsiness or restlessness: be careful when driving.
- Joint pain with swelling, redness or fever, or nerve pain with weakness or numbness, needs a doctor’s assessment.
- Stop using it and see a doctor if symptoms do not improve within a few weeks.
- Buy from a reliable source; poorly made herbal products can be contaminated.
Overdose
Taking too much may cause restlessness, palpitations, raised blood pressure, stomach upset and effects of alcohol. Seek medical help if a large amount has been taken, especially by a child.
