Indications
Balsam Peru (Peru balsam) is a fragrant resin from the Myroxylon tree of Central America. It is used as an ingredient in ointments and suppositories for haemorrhoids, and in some creams for minor wounds, nappy rash, bedsores and cracked skin. It is also used as a fragrance and flavouring.
How It Works
Balsam Peru has mild antiseptic properties and is thought to encourage healing of damaged skin by improving local blood flow and helping new tissue form. It also soothes and protects the skin surface. The scientific evidence for its healing effect is limited.
Dosage and Administration
Use only in the strength found in ready-made products. Apply a thin layer of ointment or use the suppository as directed on the label, usually 1 to 3 times a day and after bowel movements. Do not apply the pure balsam to the skin and do not swallow it.
Interactions
No important drug interactions are known with topical use. People allergic to Balsam Peru may also react to related fragrances and flavourings such as cinnamon, vanilla, clove and citrus peel.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to Balsam Peru, fragrances or any ingredient of the product
- Large open wounds or severely broken skin unless a doctor advises it
Side Effects
- Allergic contact dermatitis: redness, itching, swelling or blisters where it is applied; Balsam Peru is one of the more common causes of skin allergy
- Mild stinging or burning
Get urgent medical help if you develop widespread rash, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing, or if there is heavy rectal bleeding or severe pain.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Short-term topical use in small amounts is generally considered low risk, but ask a doctor before using it during pregnancy. When breastfeeding, do not apply it to the breast or nipple area.
Precautions and Warnings
- Stop using it if a rash or itching gets worse, as this may be an allergy rather than the original problem.
- For external or rectal use only; avoid the eyes.
- See a doctor if symptoms last more than 7 days or there is bleeding.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with topical use. If swallowed in a large amount, it may irritate the stomach and kidneys; seek medical advice.
Therapeutic Class
Topical antiseptic and wound-healing agent (natural resin).
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep suppositories cool so they do not melt.
