Indications

Bambusa bambos (thorny bamboo) is used in Unani and Ayurvedic medicine mainly as Tabashir, also called bamboo manna: a white, chalky substance that collects inside the joints of the bamboo stem. It appears as an ingredient in combination herbal powders. Traditionally it has been used as a cooling and soothing remedy for cough, excess thirst, burning sensations and acidity, and as a general tonic. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it should not replace proven treatment for any illness.

How It Works

Tabashir is made up mostly of silica (a natural mineral) with small amounts of other minerals. In the traditional system it is described as cooling and drying, and it may help to soothe the throat and stomach. How it works in the body has not been well studied.

Dosage and Administration

Take the product that contains it as directed on the label or by a registered Unani or Ayurvedic practitioner. Powders are usually taken with water or as advised. Do not take more than the recommended amount, and do not use it for long periods without advice.

Interactions

No well documented interactions are known. Mineral-rich powders may reduce the absorption of some medicines, such as the antibiotics Ciprofloxacin and Tetracycline or the thyroid medicine Levothyroxine, so take them a few hours apart. Tell your doctor about all herbal products you use.

Contraindications

Do not use it if you are allergic to bamboo or to any other ingredient in the product. Do not give it to young children unless a practitioner advises it.

Side Effects

It is usually well tolerated in small amounts. Possible effects include constipation, stomach discomfort and, rarely, allergic reactions such as rash or itching.

Get urgent medical help if you notice swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, severe stomach pain or a widespread rash.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is not enough safety information for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid it unless a doctor advises it.

Precautions and Warnings

Herbal products do not replace a proper diagnosis. See a doctor if cough, fever or stomach problems last more than a few days. People with kidney disease should ask a doctor first. Buy herbal powders only from reliable sources, as poor quality products can be contaminated.

Overdose

Taking too much may cause constipation or stomach upset. If a large amount has been swallowed, especially by a child, contact a doctor or the nearest hospital.

Therapeutic Class

Unani and Ayurvedic herbal ingredient (traditional cooling and soothing agent).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children.
