Indications
Benzyl Cinnamate is an aromatic compound found naturally in balsams such as Peru and Tolu balsam. In medicines it is an inactive or minor ingredient, used in some barrier and soothing creams (for example for nappy rash, minor burns and chafed skin) and in cosmetics and perfumes. It contributes a mild antiseptic effect and a pleasant balsamic scent, and helps dissolve other ingredients.
How It Works
Benzyl Cinnamate has weak antimicrobial and preservative properties, which help keep a cream free of germs and support its mild antiseptic action on the skin. It also acts as a fragrance and fixative, so the scent of a product lasts longer. It does not treat infections or skin disease on its own.
Dosage and Administration
There is no separate dose. Use the product that contains it as directed on its label, usually applied in a thin layer to clean, dry skin. For external use only.
Interactions
No known interactions with medicines taken by mouth. Avoid using several fragranced or balsam-containing skin products on the same area, as this raises the chance of skin sensitivity.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to Benzyl Cinnamate, cinnamates, Peru balsam (Myroxylon pereirae) or fragrance mixes.
- Do not apply to large areas of broken or weeping skin unless advised by a doctor.
Side Effects
Most people have no problems. It is a recognised fragrance allergen, so some people may develop redness, itching, burning or a rash where it is applied (contact dermatitis), especially those already allergic to Peru balsam or perfumes.
Stop using the product and get urgent medical help if you develop widespread rash, blistering, swelling of the face, lips or eyes, or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Only small amounts are present in products and little is absorbed through the skin, so normal use is not expected to be harmful in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Do not apply to the nipple area before breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings
- For external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes and mouth.
- People with fragrance or balsam allergy should check ingredient lists and patch test new products.
- If irritation develops, wash the area with water and stop use.
Overdose
Overdose is not expected with use on the skin. If a product containing it is swallowed, rinse the mouth and contact a doctor or poison centre if symptoms such as vomiting occur.
