Indications
Betahistine Mesilate is used to relieve dizziness and the spinning sensation (vertigo) linked to inner ear disorders such as Meniere’s disease, and to dizziness from other inner ear balance problems. It may also help with ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and hearing changes that come with Meniere’s disease.
How It Works
Betahistine is similar to histamine, a natural chemical in the body. It is thought to improve blood flow in the inner ear and to reduce the build-up of fluid pressure there. It also acts on histamine receptors in the brain that help balance signals settle, which reduces vertigo attacks.
Dosage and Administration
The usual adult dose is 6 mg to 12 mg three times a day, taken after meals. Your doctor may adjust the dose depending on your age and symptoms. Swallow the tablet with water. It can take a few weeks of regular use before the full benefit is felt, so do not stop on your own.
Interactions
- Antihistamines (allergy medicines such as Chlorpheniramine or Cetirizine) may reduce the effect of betahistine, and betahistine may reduce theirs.
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs, such as Selegiline) may increase betahistine levels.
- Tell your doctor about all medicines you take, including medicines for asthma and stomach ulcers.
Contraindications
- Allergy to betahistine or any ingredient of the tablet.
- Phaeochromocytoma (a rare adrenal gland tumour that raises blood pressure).
Side Effects
Side effects are usually mild and may include nausea, indigestion, stomach discomfort, bloating, headache and skin rash or itching.
Stop the medicine and get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, wheezing, or a severe widespread rash.
Pregnancy and Lactation
There is not enough information on safety in pregnancy, so it should be used only if your doctor feels it is clearly needed. It is not known whether betahistine passes into breast milk; ask your doctor before using it while breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings
- Use with caution if you have asthma, as it may worsen breathing in some people.
- Use with caution if you have or have had a stomach or duodenal ulcer.
- Taking it with food reduces stomach upset.
- Children: not recommended unless advised by a doctor.
Overdose
Taking too much may cause nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, stomach pain and, at very high doses, fits or heart rhythm problems. Seek medical help straight away if a large amount has been taken.
