Indications
Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis is a probiotic, a type of live “friendly” bacteria that naturally lives in the human gut. Probiotic products containing it are used to support healthy digestion, to help restore gut bacteria after diarrhoea or antibiotic use, and, in drop forms, to help ease infant colic and support regular bowel movements. Evidence varies between uses, and it is not a replacement for medical treatment.
How It Works
The bacteria settle in the gut for a time and help keep a healthy balance of gut microbes. They compete with harmful germs for space and food, produce substances that make the gut less friendly to these germs, support the gut lining and help train the immune system. They may also help food move through the gut more regularly.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label or by your doctor. Drops for babies are usually given once a day, either directly into the mouth or mixed with a small amount of cool milk; do not mix with hot food or drinks, as heat kills the bacteria. Capsules or sachets for adults and children are usually taken once a day. Shake drops well before use.
Interactions
Antibiotics can kill probiotic bacteria, so take the probiotic at least 2 hours before or after an antibiotic dose. Medicines that strongly suppress the immune system may increase the very small risk of infection from probiotics; ask your doctor first.
Contraindications
- Allergy to any ingredient of the product
- Severely weakened immune system, unless a doctor advises
- Critically ill patients, or people with a central venous line, unless a doctor advises
Side Effects
Probiotics are usually well tolerated. Mild wind, bloating or a change in stool pattern can happen in the first few days. Very rarely, in seriously ill or immune-weakened people, probiotic bacteria may cause infection.
Get urgent medical help if you or your baby have signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, swelling or difficulty breathing, or if there is high fever, blood in the stool, persistent vomiting or signs of dehydration.
Pregnancy and Lactation
This probiotic is generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding when used as directed on the label.
Precautions and Warnings
Premature babies and children with serious illness should use it only under medical supervision. Infant colic can sometimes hide other problems: see a doctor if a baby cries for very long periods, feeds poorly, has fever, vomits or does not gain weight. Check the product for milk or other allergens.
Overdose
Taking more than recommended is unlikely to be harmful but may cause wind or bloating. Return to the usual dose.
Therapeutic Class
Probiotic (live bacterial supplement)
Storage
Store as directed on the pack. Many products are kept below 25 to 30°C in a dry place, and some drops must be kept in the refrigerator at 2 to 8°C after opening. Do not freeze. Keep out of the reach of children.
