Indications
Bismuth Oxide is used as an ingredient in ointments and suppositories for haemorrhoids (piles), anal fissures and minor irritation around the anus. It helps protect sore skin and soothe itching and minor oozing. It is usually combined with other soothing or astringent ingredients.
How It Works
Bismuth Oxide is a mild astringent and protective powder. It helps dry moist, inflamed skin, forms a thin barrier over it and has a weak antiseptic action. Very little is absorbed into the body when it is applied to the skin or used rectally.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label, usually by applying the ointment or inserting one suppository in the morning, at night and after each bowel movement. Clean and gently dry the area first and wash your hands afterwards. Do not swallow.
Interactions
Significant interactions are not expected with topical use. Ask a doctor before using other rectal medicines at the same time.
Contraindications
Do not use if you are allergic to bismuth compounds or any other ingredient of the product.
Side Effects
- Mild burning, stinging or itching where it is applied
- Skin allergy or rash (uncommon)
Get urgent medical help if you have heavy bleeding from the rectum, severe pain, fever, or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips or throat or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Haemorrhoids are common in pregnancy. Short-term use is generally considered low risk because very little is absorbed, but ask a doctor or pharmacist before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings
- For external or rectal use only.
- See a doctor if there is bleeding or if symptoms do not improve within 7 days, to rule out other causes.
- Avoid long-term heavy use without medical advice.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with normal use. If the product is swallowed in a large amount, contact a doctor or poison centre.
Therapeutic Class
Astringent and skin protectant (anti-haemorrhoidal ingredient).
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep suppositories cool so they do not melt.
