Indications
Bole Rubra, also called Armenian bole and known in Unani medicine as Gil-e-Armani, is a natural red clay rich in iron oxide. It is used as an ingredient of Unani compound preparations. Traditionally it is used as an astringent and to help stop bleeding, for example in diarrhoea, dysentery, bleeding piles and heavy bleeding, and it is applied externally in pastes for swelling, bruises and minor wounds. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited.
How It Works
Clays like bole can bind water and some irritating substances in the gut, which may make stools firmer. Its astringent (tightening) and drying properties are traditionally believed to reduce bleeding and secretions.
Dosage and Administration
Use only as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner, as part of a properly prepared and purified product. Do not use raw clay or soil from any other source.
Interactions
- Clay can bind other medicines in the gut and reduce their absorption; take other oral medicines at least 2 hours before or after.
- Iron content may affect absorption of some antibiotics such as Ciprofloxacin and Doxycycline, and thyroid medicine such as Levothyroxine.
Contraindications
- Intestinal blockage or severe constipation.
- Conditions with iron overload, such as haemochromatosis.
- Young children, unless advised by a doctor.
Side Effects
Constipation, stomach heaviness and dark stools may occur. Long term or large use of clay products can reduce absorption of nutrients, and poorly purified clay may contain harmful metals such as lead.
Get urgent medical help if you have heavy bleeding, black or bloody stools, severe stomach pain or swelling, vomiting, or are unable to pass stool or gas.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless a doctor advises it, because of possible contamination with heavy metals and lack of safety information.
Precautions and Warnings
- Bleeding from the rectum, heavy menstrual bleeding or blood in vomit needs proper medical assessment.
- See a doctor if diarrhoea lasts more than 2 days or comes with fever; use oral rehydration salts (ORS) to prevent dehydration.
- Use only products from a licensed manufacturer.
Overdose
Large amounts can cause severe constipation or bowel blockage. Seek medical help if this occurs.
