Indications

Boswellia serrata (Indian frankincense) is a herbal extract taken from the resin of the boswellia tree. It is used as a supplement to ease joint pain and stiffness, mainly in osteoarthritis of the knee, and is often combined with Glucosamine, Chondroitin or other joint ingredients. The evidence shows a modest benefit, and it does not replace treatment prescribed by a doctor.

How It Works

The active substances, boswellic acids, reduce the body’s production of leukotrienes, chemicals that drive inflammation. This may lessen swelling, pain and stiffness in the joints.

Dosage and Administration

Follow the dose on the product label or as advised by the doctor; the amount depends on how concentrated the extract is. Studies have commonly used about 100 to 250 mg of standardised extract once or twice a day. Take with food. It may take a few weeks to notice an effect.

Interactions

  • Information is limited. Use with care alongside blood thinners such as Warfarin and antiplatelet medicines, and with anti-inflammatory painkillers.
  • It may affect how the liver handles some medicines; tell the doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you take.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to boswellia or any ingredient of the product.
  • Pregnancy.

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated. Possible:

  • Stomach upset, heartburn, nausea or diarrhoea.
  • Skin rash or itching.

Get urgent medical help for signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or a widespread rash.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Avoid in pregnancy, as safety is not known and it may affect the womb. Avoid while breastfeeding unless a doctor advises it.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Joint pain with fever, a hot red swollen joint or sudden injury needs a doctor’s check rather than a supplement.
  • Not recommended for children unless a doctor advises it.
  • Stop and see a doctor if pain or swelling gets worse.

Overdose

High doses are most likely to cause stomach upset and diarrhoea. Seek medical advice if a large amount is taken, especially by a child.

Therapeutic Class

Herbal anti-inflammatory (joint health supplement).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children.
