Indications
Brahmi Rasayana is a classical Ayurvedic preparation based mainly on Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri, also called water hyssop), usually combined with other herbs in a base of honey, sugar or ghee. A rasayana is an Ayurvedic rejuvenating tonic. It is traditionally used to support memory, concentration and learning, and for mental tiredness, anxiety, nervousness, poor sleep and general weakness. Some studies on Bacopa suggest a modest improvement in memory after several weeks, but evidence for the full preparation is limited.
How It Works
Brahmi contains plant compounds called bacosides. In laboratory and animal studies these support communication between nerve cells, have antioxidant effects that protect brain cells, and may influence brain chemicals involved in mood and stress. Effects on memory, if any, usually take several weeks to appear.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic practitioner. Rasayana preparations are usually taken once or twice a day with warm milk or water, often after meals. Use for a set course and ask a practitioner before long-term use. Children should use it only on the advice of a practitioner.
