Indications
Cactus extract is a plant extract, usually taken from prickly pear cactus (Opuntia) or similar species. In medicines it is mainly found in traditional moist burn and wound ointments, combined with Sesame oil and Beeswax. These ointments are used to soothe and protect minor burns, scalds, abrasions and superficial wounds while they heal. Cactus extract is also used in skin-care products as a soothing and moisturising ingredient. Scientific evidence for its own healing effect is limited.
How It Works
Cactus plants contain mucilage (a gel-like, water-holding substance), natural sugars and plant antioxidants. On the skin these are thought to hold moisture, calm irritation and help form a protective film. In combination ointments, most of the protective effect comes from the oily base, with the extract adding soothing properties.
Dosage and Administration
Use the ointment as directed on the label or by your doctor. Usually the area is gently cleaned and a thin, even layer of ointment is applied several times a day, before the previous layer dries. Wipe away old ointment gently before reapplying. Cool a fresh burn under clean running water for several minutes first.
Interactions
No significant interactions with medicines are known. Do not apply other creams to the same area at the same time unless advised by a doctor.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to cactus plants or any ingredient of the product.
- Deep, large or infected burns, which need medical treatment.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Mild stinging, redness or an allergic rash may occur in sensitive people. Stop using it if irritation develops.
Get urgent medical help for signs of allergy such as hives, swelling of the face or lips or difficulty breathing. Also seek care for large or deep burns, burns on the face, hands, feet, genitals or joints, electrical or chemical burns, and wounds with spreading redness, pus, increasing pain or fever.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Small amounts used on the skin in an ointment are not expected to cause harm during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If used on the breast, clean the area before feeding the baby.
Precautions and Warnings
For external use only. Avoid the eyes. Do not use on large areas of broken skin without medical advice. See a doctor if a wound is not healing or looks infected.
Overdose
Overdose is not expected with use on the skin. If a child swallows a large amount of ointment, contact a doctor.
