Indications

Calamine is a soothing lotion or cream applied to the skin to relieve itching and mild irritation from insect bites and stings, chickenpox, heat rash (prickly heat), sunburn, mild eczema, nettle rash and contact with irritant plants. Some products combine it with an antihistamine such as Diphenhydramine, or with Camphor.

How It Works

Calamine is a mixture of zinc oxide with a small amount of iron oxide, which gives it its pink colour. As the lotion dries on the skin it leaves a thin protective film and produces a cooling feeling that eases itching. Zinc oxide also has a mild drying (astringent) and slight antiseptic effect, which helps weeping rashes dry out.

Dosage and Administration

Shake the lotion well. Using cotton wool, dab a thin layer onto the itchy area and let it dry. Apply as often as needed, usually 3 to 4 times a day, or as directed on the label. It is for use on the skin only.

Interactions

No important interactions are known. Avoid applying other creams or ointments on the same area at the same time unless advised.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to Calamine, zinc oxide or any ingredient of the product.
  • Products containing an antihistamine should not be used on large areas, on chickenpox or on broken skin, especially in children.

Side Effects

Calamine is very well tolerated. Occasionally it may cause mild stinging, dryness or skin irritation.

Get urgent medical help if a severe rash, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing develops, or if the product is swallowed in a large amount.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Plain Calamine lotion is considered safe to use on the skin during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Do not apply to the nipple area before feeding.

Precautions and Warnings

Avoid the eyes, mouth, inside the nose and genitals. Do not apply to deep or infected wounds. If the itching or rash does not improve within 7 days, gets worse, or comes with fever, see a doctor.

Overdose

Overdose on the skin is unlikely. If swallowed, rinse the mouth and drink water; contact a doctor if a large amount was swallowed or symptoms develop.

Therapeutic Class

Topical antipruritic (anti-itch) and skin protectant.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the bottle tightly closed and do not freeze.
