Indications
Coral Calcium is a calcium supplement made from calcium carbonate taken from fossilised coral. It often also contains Magnesium and other minerals. It is used to add calcium when the diet does not provide enough, to support bone health, and alongside treatment for osteoporosis (thin, weak bones) when a doctor advises it. It is not a cure for other diseases.
How It Works
Calcium is the main mineral in bones and teeth and is also needed for muscles, nerves and blood clotting. Vitamin D helps the body absorb it.
Dosage and Administration
Adults: usually 500 to 1,000 mg of elemental calcium a day, taken in divided doses with food, or as directed on the label or by the doctor. Check the label for the amount of elemental calcium in each tablet or capsule. Total calcium from food and supplements should not usually go above about 2,000 mg a day for adults.
Interactions
Calcium reduces the absorption of Doxycycline and other Tetracyclines, Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin, Levothyroxine, Iron, Zinc and Alendronate. Take these at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after calcium, or as the doctor advises. Thiazide diuretics such as Hydrochlorothiazide can raise blood calcium. Use with care if you take Digoxin.
Contraindications
- High blood calcium or high calcium in the urine.
- Severe kidney disease, unless a doctor advises it.
- Allergy to any ingredient of the product.
Side Effects
Constipation, wind, bloating and mild stomach upset are the most common.
Get urgent medical help if you have signs of high blood calcium, such as severe thirst, frequent urination, vomiting, confusion or muscle weakness, or signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing. See a doctor about severe back or side pain, which may be a kidney stone.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Calcium is safe and often recommended in pregnancy and breastfeeding at the usual doses. Do not exceed the recommended amount unless a doctor advises it.
Precautions and Warnings
Talk to a doctor first if you have kidney disease, a history of kidney stones or a condition that affects calcium levels. Choose products from reliable makers, as coral and sea-sourced minerals can contain impurities if not well controlled. Coral Calcium has no proven benefit beyond that of other calcium supplements.
Overdose
Taking too much over time can raise blood calcium, causing nausea, vomiting, thirst, constipation, confusion and kidney problems. Stop taking it and seek medical advice.
