Indications
Carboxypolymethylene, better known as carbomer, is a synthetic polymer (a long chain-like molecule) that forms a clear, smooth gel when mixed with water. It is mostly an inactive ingredient. It is used:
- As the base of water-based personal lubricating gels, to ease dryness and discomfort during intercourse or medical examinations
- As the gel base for ultrasound and ECG gels
- As a thickener in skin gels, creams, eye gels (artificial tears) and cosmetics
How It Works
Carbomer absorbs water and swells into a soft gel. On the skin or mucous membranes (the moist lining of the vagina, eye or mouth) it forms a slippery, moisturising layer that reduces friction and dryness. It is not absorbed into the body in meaningful amounts.
Dosage and Administration
For lubricating gel: apply a small amount to the area or to a condom or device as needed, and reapply if required. Use as directed on the label. Water-based carbomer gels are generally compatible with latex condoms. Wash off with water.
Interactions
No important drug interactions are known. Avoid applying other creams or medicines to the same area at the same time unless advised, as the gel may affect how they spread or absorb.
Contraindications
- Allergy or sensitivity to carbomer or other ingredients (for example preservatives or fragrances in the product)
Side Effects
Carbomer is generally very well tolerated. Occasionally mild irritation, itching, redness or a burning feeling may occur, usually due to other ingredients.
Get urgent medical help for signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing or widespread rash. See a doctor if irritation is severe or lasts.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Carbomer is not absorbed in meaningful amounts and is considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Lubricating gels are not contraceptives and do not prevent pregnancy. If trying to conceive, ask a doctor about a sperm-friendly lubricant.
Precautions and Warnings
- For external use only; do not swallow.
- Lubricating gels do not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
- Stop use if irritation develops.
- Persistent vaginal dryness, pain or discharge should be checked by a doctor.
Overdose
Overuse on the skin is harmless. If a large amount is swallowed, it may cause mild stomach upset; drink water and seek advice if unwell.
Therapeutic Class
Pharmaceutical excipient (gelling agent); personal lubricant base.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Close the cap after use.
