Indications
Carica Papaya Leaf Extract is a herbal preparation made from the leaves of the papaya tree. It is traditionally used to help support blood platelet counts in people with dengue fever and other viral fevers that cause low platelets (thrombocytopenia). Some small studies suggest it may help platelet counts recover faster, but scientific evidence is limited and it does not cure dengue or replace hospital monitoring.
How It Works
Papaya leaves contain plant compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids (including carpaine) and phenolic acids. These are thought to help protect platelets from being destroyed, may support platelet production in the bone marrow, and have antioxidant and mild anti-inflammatory effects. The exact way it works is not fully understood.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. Tablets or syrup are usually given for about 5 days during the illness. Swallow with water after food. Children should take it only under a doctor’s guidance.
Interactions
- It may increase the effect of blood thinners such as Warfarin, Aspirin or Clopidogrel, raising the risk of bleeding.
- It may lower blood sugar and add to the effect of diabetes medicines.
- Tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements you take.
Contraindications
- Allergy to papaya, papain or latex (cross-reaction is possible)
- Pregnancy
- People taking blood thinners, unless a doctor approves
Side Effects
Usually well tolerated in short courses. Possible effects include:
- Nausea, vomiting or stomach upset
- Bitter taste
- Diarrhoea
- Rarely, allergic skin rash
Dengue itself can become dangerous. Get urgent medical help for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding from the gums or nose, blood in vomit or stools, black stools, cold clammy skin, extreme tiredness or restlessness, breathing difficulty, or signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use during pregnancy, because papaya compounds may stimulate the womb. Safety during breastfeeding is not established; avoid unless your doctor advises it.
Precautions and Warnings
- It is a supportive herbal product only; dengue needs medical assessment, rest, fluids and regular platelet and blood tests.
- Do not take painkillers such as Aspirin or Ibuprofen in dengue; Paracetamol is preferred, as advised by a doctor.
- Use with care in diabetes and liver disease.
- Scientific evidence is limited; do not delay hospital care.
Overdose
Large amounts may cause severe vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach pain. Stop taking it and seek medical advice.
