Carmellose Sodium

Indications

Carmellose sodium (also called carboxymethylcellulose sodium) is mainly used as a lubricating eye drop or gel (artificial tears) to relieve dry, gritty, burning or tired eyes caused by dry eye syndrome, screen use, wind, air conditioning, contact lens wear or after eye surgery. It is also used as a lubricating gel and as an inactive thickening ingredient in many medicines.

How It Works

Carmellose sodium is a water-loving cellulose polymer that forms a thin, smooth, moist film over the surface of the eye. This film adds to and stabilises the natural tear layer, reduces friction when blinking, and helps protect and soothe the eye surface. It is not absorbed into the body in meaningful amounts.

Dosage and Administration

For dry eyes, adults and children usually use 1 to 2 drops in each affected eye as needed, often 3 to 4 times a day or more, as directed on the label. Gels are often used at bedtime because they last longer but may blur vision briefly. Lubricating gels for other uses should be applied as directed on the label.

  • Wash hands before use and avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any surface.
  • Single-dose units should be used once and thrown away.
  • Many preservative-free products can be used with contact lenses; check the label.

Interactions

No significant interactions are expected. If you use other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between them, and apply this lubricant last. Gel forms should be used after other drops.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to carmellose sodium or any other ingredient, including preservatives in multi-dose bottles.

Side Effects

It is generally very well tolerated. Possible effects include brief blurred vision, mild stinging, eye irritation, sticky eyelashes, or redness.

Stop using it and seek urgent medical help if you develop eye pain, a change in vision, worsening redness or irritation that lasts more than 72 hours, or signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the eyelids or face.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Because it is not absorbed into the body in meaningful amounts, it is considered safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

If vision is blurred after use, wait until it clears before driving or using machines. See a doctor if symptoms do not improve within a few days, as dry eyes can sometimes be a sign of another condition. Do not use if the solution changes colour or becomes cloudy. Discard multi-dose bottles after the period stated on the label once opened.

Overdose

Using extra drops is not harmful. If swallowed accidentally, it is unlikely to cause harm.

Therapeutic Class

Ocular lubricant (artificial tears); also a pharmaceutical excipient.

Storage

Store below 30°C, away from light, with the cap tightly closed. Do not freeze. Keep out of the reach of children.
