Catechu

Indications

Catechu (khair or kattha) is a dried extract made from the heartwood of the Acacia catechu tree. In Unani and Ayurvedic practice it is traditionally used as an astringent for loose motions (diarrhoea), mouth ulcers, sore throat, bleeding or spongy gums and minor skin wounds, often in combination with other herbs. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited.

How It Works

Catechu is rich in tannins and catechins. Tannins are astringents: they tighten tissues and reduce secretions, which may help reduce watery stools and soothe irritated mouth and throat linings. Catechins also have antioxidant activity. These actions have mainly been shown in laboratory studies.

Dosage and Administration

Use as directed on the label or by a registered Unani or Ayurvedic practitioner. It is usually taken by mouth as part of a tablet, powder or syrup, or used as a mouth gargle or lozenge. For diarrhoea, also drink plenty of fluids and oral rehydration solution (ORS). Do not use for long periods without advice.

Interactions

  • Tannins can reduce the absorption of iron supplements and some medicines such as Digoxin or certain antibiotics: take them at least 2 hours apart.
  • Large amounts may add to the effect of other anti-diarrhoea medicines such as Loperamide.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to catechu or Acacia.
  • Constipation or bowel blockage.
  • Bloody diarrhoea with high fever, unless a doctor advises it.

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated in small amounts. It may cause constipation, stomach discomfort or a dry, puckering feeling in the mouth. Rarely, allergic skin reactions occur.

Get urgent medical help if diarrhoea is severe, bloody or lasts more than 2 days, if there are signs of dehydration such as very little urine, sunken eyes or drowsiness (especially in children and the elderly), or if a severe allergic reaction occurs.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. Avoid unless a doctor or registered practitioner advises it.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Herbal products do not replace medical care: see a doctor for persistent diarrhoea, mouth ulcers lasting over 2 weeks, or gum bleeding.
  • For children, use only on medical advice; rehydration is the most important treatment for diarrhoea.
  • Buy from reliable sources, as quality can vary.

Overdose

Large amounts may cause severe constipation and stomach upset. Stop use and seek medical advice.

Therapeutic Class
