Indications

In digestive enzyme products this ingredient is listed as Cellulose, but what it supplies is cellulase, an enzyme that breaks down cellulose, the tough fibre found in the cell walls of vegetables, fruits and grains. It is combined with other digestive enzymes such as Pepsin, Lipase and Pancreatin to help with indigestion, a feeling of fullness after meals, bloating and wind, especially after fibre-rich or heavy food.

How It Works

Humans do not make cellulase, so plant fibre passes through the gut largely undigested. Cellulase helps break part of this fibre into smaller pieces. This may loosen plant cell walls so that other enzymes can reach the nutrients inside, and it may reduce the gas and bloating some people feel after eating vegetables and pulses. The evidence for this benefit is modest.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by your doctor. Enzyme powders and tablets are usually taken with or just after meals so that they mix with the food. Powders should be mixed with water or another liquid as described on the pack.

Interactions

No important interactions are known for cellulase itself. If you take other medicines regularly, ask a pharmacist before adding any digestive enzyme product, as other enzymes in the same product may have their own interactions.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to cellulase, to the fungal source it is made from, or to any other ingredient in the product.
  • Do not use for persistent stomach pain without first seeing a doctor.

Side Effects

Cellulase is usually well tolerated. Mild stomach discomfort, loose stools or nausea can occur. Allergic reactions are rare.

Get urgent medical help if you develop a rash with swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, black or bloody stools, vomiting blood, or severe stomach pain.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is little information on use in pregnancy or breastfeeding. It is not expected to be absorbed into the body in meaningful amounts, but ask your doctor before using any supplement during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Indigestion that lasts more than two weeks, weight loss, difficulty swallowing or anaemia need a medical check.
  • Enzyme products do not treat ulcers, gallstones or infections.
  • Keep powders dry, as moisture can make enzymes lose their activity.

Overdose

Taking too much is unlikely to be serious but may cause stomach upset or diarrhoea. Contact a doctor if symptoms are severe.

Therapeutic Class
