Indications

Cepalin is an extract of onion (Allium cepa) used in topical gels and creams for scars. It is used to help soften and flatten scars and make them less red, including scars from surgery, cuts, burns and acne, and to improve the look of stretch marks. Results are modest and vary from person to person.

How It Works

Onion extract contains natural plant compounds such as flavonoids (for example quercetin). These are thought to calm inflammation and reduce the overgrowth of the fibrous tissue that makes scars thick and raised. Products often also contain moisturising ingredients that help keep the scar soft.

Dosage and Administration

Use as directed on the label. Usually, a thin layer is gently massaged into the clean, dry scar 3 to 4 times a day for new scars. Use only on healed skin, never on open wounds. Regular use for several weeks to a few months is usually needed before any change is seen.

Interactions

No important interactions with medicines taken by mouth are known. Avoid using other strong creams on the same area at the same time unless your doctor advises it.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to onion or to any ingredient in the product
  • Open wounds, broken or infected skin

Side Effects

It is usually well tolerated. Some people get mild redness, itching, burning or a rash where it is applied.

Stop using it and get urgent medical help if you get swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Very little is absorbed through the skin, but safety data are limited. Ask your doctor before use during pregnancy. During breastfeeding, do not apply to the breast or nipple area.

Precautions and Warnings

For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes and mouth. Protect the scar from strong sun while using it. See a doctor if a scar is growing, painful or changing in colour, because it may need other treatment.

Overdose

Using too much on the skin is unlikely to cause harm. If swallowed, rinse the mouth and seek advice if the person feels unwell.

Therapeutic Class

Topical scar treatment (plant extract).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the cap tightly closed.
