Indications

Chirata (Swertia chirata) is a very bitter herb from the Himalayan region, widely used in Unani and Ayurvedic medicine. It is traditionally used as a bitter tonic to improve appetite and digestion, for intermittent fever, for skin problems such as pimples and boils (as a so-called blood purifier), for intestinal worms and to support liver function. Laboratory studies suggest some anti-inflammatory, liver-protective and blood-sugar-lowering effects, but evidence in people is limited.

How It Works

Chirata contains bitter compounds such as swertiamarin, amarogentin and mangiferin. Bitter substances stimulate the taste receptors and digestive secretions, which may improve appetite and digestion. Some of these compounds also show anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and liver-protecting activity in laboratory studies.

Dosage and Administration

Use as directed on the label or by a registered Unani or Ayurvedic practitioner. It is usually taken by mouth as a powder, infusion, tablet or syrup for a limited period. Do not exceed the recommended dose.

Interactions

  • Medicines for diabetes, such as Metformin or Gliclazide, and Insulin: Chirata may lower blood sugar further, increasing the risk of low blood sugar.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines and herbal products you take.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to Chirata.
  • Stomach or duodenal ulcer, as bitters increase acid secretion.
  • Pregnancy.

Side Effects

The very bitter taste may cause nausea, vomiting or stomach upset in some people. It may lower blood sugar, causing shakiness, sweating or dizziness in people on diabetes medicines.

Get urgent medical help if you have signs of very low blood sugar (confusion, fainting, fits), severe abdominal pain, or an allergic reaction with swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Avoid in pregnancy because safety has not been established. Do not use during breastfeeding unless advised by a doctor.

Precautions and Warnings

  • People with diabetes should check their blood sugar more often while using it.
  • Stop using it about 2 weeks before planned surgery because of its effect on blood sugar.
  • Fever should be properly diagnosed: in Bangladesh, fever may be due to malaria, dengue or typhoid, which need specific treatment.
  • Use in children only on a practitioner’s advice.
