Indications

Chlorophytum arundinaceum is a herb whose dried roots are known as Safed Musli (white musli). It is used in Unani and Ayurvedic preparations, usually in combination with other herbs, as a general tonic. Traditionally it has been used to improve strength and stamina, to support male sexual health and sperm quality, and to help recovery after illness. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, mostly from small or animal studies, and it is not a proven treatment for infertility or erectile problems.

How It Works

The roots contain natural saponins, starch-like sugars, proteins and minerals. In laboratory and animal studies, these compounds have shown mild antioxidant and tonic effects and may influence hormone activity, but how they work in people is not clearly known.

Dosage and Administration

Take the product as directed on the label or by a registered Unani or Ayurvedic practitioner. Powders are often taken with milk or water. Do not exceed the recommended amount.

Interactions

No well documented interactions are known. Because it may slightly lower blood sugar, people taking diabetes medicines such as Metformin or Insulin should check their sugar levels. Tell your doctor about all herbal products you are taking, especially if you also take medicines for erectile problems such as Sildenafil.

Contraindications

Do not use it if you are allergic to it or any ingredient in the product. Not suitable for children.

Side Effects

It is usually well tolerated. Some people may have indigestion, bloating, loss of appetite or loose stools. Allergic reactions are rare.

Get urgent medical help if you have swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or a severe rash.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. Avoid use during these times.

Precautions and Warnings

Sexual problems and infertility can have medical causes such as diabetes, heart disease or hormone problems, so see a doctor for proper check-ups. Be careful with products claiming instant sexual effects: some unregistered products have been found to contain hidden prescription drugs. Buy only registered products from reliable sources.

Overdose

Large amounts may cause stomach upset. If a large amount has been taken, or a child has swallowed it, contact a doctor.

Therapeutic Class

Unani and Ayurvedic herbal ingredient (traditional general and sexual tonic).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children.
