Indications

Coal Tar Solution is used on the skin and scalp to treat long-term scaly skin conditions, including psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis, dandruff and some types of chronic eczema. It helps reduce scaling, itching and inflammation. It is found in shampoos, lotions, ointments and bath additives.

How It Works

Coal tar is a complex mixture of many substances obtained from coal. It slows the over-rapid growth of skin cells seen in psoriasis and dandruff, helps loosen and shed scales, and has mild anti-itch, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effects.

Dosage and Administration

Use as directed on the label or by your doctor. Shampoo is usually massaged into wet scalp, left for a few minutes, rinsed off and used 2 or 3 times a week. Lotions or ointments are usually applied thinly to affected skin once or twice daily. Wash your hands after use. Do not use more often or for longer than advised.

Interactions

Avoid using with other medicines that make the skin sensitive to light, such as Methoxsalen, or with strong sunlight or sunbeds unless your doctor has planned light therapy. Do not use with other irritant skin products on the same area unless advised. No important interactions with medicines taken by mouth are known.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to coal tar or any ingredient.
  • Acute, weeping, infected or broken skin.
  • Unstable or pustular psoriasis, or psoriasis covering most of the body (erythrodermic).
  • Do not use on the face, genital or rectal areas, or near the eyes, unless your doctor advises.

Side Effects

Common effects include skin irritation, stinging, redness, a strong smell, and staining of skin, hair (especially light or grey hair), clothes and bedding. Folliculitis (inflamed, pimple-like hair follicles), acne-like spots and increased sensitivity to sunlight can occur.

Stop use and get urgent medical help if you develop severe burning, blistering, a spreading rash, swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Coal tar contains substances that may be harmful in large amounts. Avoid use in pregnancy, especially on large areas, unless your doctor advises it. During breastfeeding, use only if advised, avoid large areas and do not apply to the breast.

Precautions and Warnings

  • For external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes; rinse well with water if it gets in the eyes.
  • Protect treated skin from sunlight for at least 24 hours after use, unless your doctor plans light therapy.
  • Long-term heavy use of coal tar has been linked to a possible skin cancer risk; use only as directed.
  • It may stain fabric and hair; use old towels and cover pillows.
  • Some products are flammable; keep away from flames.
  • Do not use on children under the age advised on the label without a doctor’s advice.

Overdose

Using too much on the skin may cause irritation and burning; wash off with soap and water. If swallowed, it can be toxic: do not induce vomiting, and seek medical help immediately.

Therapeutic Class

Topical keratoplastic and antipsoriatic agent (tar preparation).

Storage

Store below 30°C, away from light and flames, with the cap tightly closed, out of the reach of children.
