Indications
Cochlospermum religiosum (also written Cochiospermum religiosum) is the buttercup tree or yellow silk cotton tree. Its gum, known as katira gum, is used in Unani and Ayurvedic medicine as an ingredient in herbal powders. Traditionally the gum has been used as a soothing and cooling remedy for stomach irritation and ulcers, cough and sore throat, burning while passing urine, and as a mild laxative. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited.
How It Works
Katira gum is a natural plant gum that swells in water to form a soft, slippery gel. This gel can coat and soothe irritated linings in the mouth, throat and stomach, and its bulk can help soften stools. The bark and gum also contain plant compounds with mild antioxidant activity in laboratory studies.
Dosage and Administration
Take the product as directed on the label or by a registered Unani or Ayurvedic practitioner. Gums are usually soaked or mixed with plenty of water before taking. Always drink enough fluid with it, as dry gum can swell in the throat.
Interactions
Like other plant gums, it may slow or reduce the absorption of medicines taken at the same time. Take other medicines at least an hour before or a few hours after it. Tell your doctor about all herbal products you use.
Contraindications
Do not use it if you are allergic to plant gums or any ingredient in the product. Avoid it if you have difficulty swallowing or a known narrowing or blockage of the food pipe or bowel.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Possible effects include bloating, wind and loose stools. Allergic reactions to plant gums can occur.
Get urgent medical help if you have chest pain or choking after taking it, cannot pass stools with severe stomach pain, or develop swelling of the face, lips or throat or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
There is not enough safety information for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use it only if a doctor agrees.
Precautions and Warnings
Stomach ulcers, ongoing cough and burning urine need proper medical diagnosis, as infections or other causes may need specific treatment. See a doctor if symptoms continue for more than a few days. Do not take it right before lying down.
Overdose
Too much may cause bloating, cramps or blockage, especially without enough water. Seek medical help if severe stomach pain or vomiting occurs.
