Indications
Curculigo orchioides is a small herb whose dried root is known as Kali Musli (black musli). It is used in Unani and Ayurvedic tonics, often together with Safed Musli and other herbs. Traditionally it has been used to improve strength and vitality, to support male sexual health, and for general weakness, joint pain and some urinary complaints. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited and comes mostly from laboratory and animal studies.
How It Works
The root contains plant compounds such as phenolic glycosides (for example curculigoside), saponins and mucilage. In laboratory studies these show antioxidant and mild anti-inflammatory effects and may influence hormone and immune activity. Its effects in people have not been well studied.
Dosage and Administration
Take the product as directed on the label or by a registered Unani or Ayurvedic practitioner. It is usually taken as part of a powder or capsule with milk or water. Do not use more than the recommended amount or for long periods without advice.
Interactions
No well documented interactions are known. Because it may affect hormone activity, ask your doctor before using it with hormone treatments. People taking diabetes medicines or blood thinners such as Warfarin should also ask a doctor first, as information is limited.
Contraindications
Do not use it if you are allergic to it or any ingredient in the product. Not suitable for children.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated in normal amounts. Possible effects include stomach upset, heaviness after meals, constipation or a feeling of heat in the body. Allergic reactions are rare.
Get urgent medical help if you have swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or a severe rash.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. Avoid use during these times.
Precautions and Warnings
Weakness, sexual problems and joint pain can have medical causes, so see a doctor for proper diagnosis. Avoid unregistered products that promise instant sexual effects, as some have been found to contain hidden prescription drugs. People with liver disease should ask a doctor before use.
Overdose
Large amounts may cause stomach upset. If a large amount has been taken, or a child has swallowed it, contact a doctor.
