Indications
Cytochrome C is used in eye drops, combined with Adenosine, Nicotinamide and Sodium Succinate, for early age-related cataract (clouding of the lens of the eye). The aim is to slow the cataract from getting worse. Evidence that these drops slow cataract is limited, and they do not remove an existing cataract; surgery is the only proven treatment for a cataract that affects vision.
How It Works
Cytochrome C is a natural protein that helps cells use oxygen to make energy. In the eye drop combination it is thought to support energy production in the lens and protect it from damage caused by oxidation, which is linked with cataract formation.
Dosage and Administration
For use in the eye only. Use as prescribed by your eye doctor; the usual dose is 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye 2 to 3 times a day. Treatment is often continued for a long time.
- Wash your hands, tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid and put the drop inside.
- Close the eye gently for a minute and press on the inner corner of the eye.
- Do not let the dropper tip touch the eye or any surface.
- Leave at least 5 minutes between different eye drops.
Interactions
No important interactions are known with eye use. If you use other eye drops or ointments, leave a gap of at least 5 minutes between them. Tell your doctor about all medicines you use.
Contraindications
- Allergy to Cytochrome C or any other ingredient of the drops
Side Effects
Usually well tolerated. Brief stinging, burning, redness or blurred vision after putting in the drops may occur.
Stop using and see a doctor urgently if you have eye pain, a sudden drop in vision, marked redness or swelling of the eye or eyelids, or signs of an allergic reaction such as rash or swelling of the face.
Pregnancy and Lactation
There is little information on use in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use only if your doctor advises.
Precautions and Warnings
- Have regular eye check-ups; these drops do not replace cataract surgery when it is needed.
- Remove contact lenses before use and wait 15 minutes before putting them back.
- If vision is blurred after use, do not drive until it clears.
- Throw the bottle away 4 weeks after opening, or as stated on the pack.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with eye drops. If too many drops are used, rinse the eye with clean water. If a child swallows the drops, contact a doctor.
