Indications
Dapoxetine is used to treat premature ejaculation (ejaculating sooner than wanted, often within about 2 minutes, causing distress) in men aged 18 to 64 years.
How It Works
Dapoxetine is a short-acting SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor). It briefly raises the level of serotonin, a chemical messenger in the brain and nerves, which helps delay the ejaculation reflex. It acts quickly and leaves the body within a day.
Dosage and Administration
Usual starting dose: 30 mg taken about 1 to 3 hours before sexual activity. The doctor may increase it to 60 mg if 30 mg is not enough and causes no troublesome side effects. Do not take more than one dose in 24 hours. Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water, with or without food. It is taken only when needed, not every day. It is not for women or for anyone under 18.
Interactions
Do not take dapoxetine with, or within 14 days of, MAO inhibitors (such as Selegiline or Linezolid), Thioridazine, other SSRIs or SNRIs, tricyclic antidepressants, Lithium, Tramadol, triptans for migraine or St John’s wort. Strong enzyme blockers such as Ketoconazole, Itraconazole, Clarithromycin and Ritonavir must not be combined with it. Taking it with Sildenafil, Tadalafil or blood pressure medicines can increase dizziness and fainting. Avoid alcohol, as it increases dizziness and drowsiness.
Contraindications
- Allergy to dapoxetine or any ingredient of the product.
- Heart failure or significant heart disease, such as heart block, angina, past heart attack or serious valve disease.
- A history of mania or severe depression.
- Moderate or severe liver disease.
- Use of the medicines listed above that must not be combined with it.
Side Effects
Common: nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhoea, trouble sleeping and tiredness.
Get urgent medical help if you have:
- Fainting, or feeling faint (sit or lie down at once with your head low until it passes).
- Chest pain or a fast or irregular heartbeat.
- A seizure (fit).
- Sudden changes in mood, or thoughts of harming yourself.
- Swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Dapoxetine is for men only and must not be used by women, including during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings
Dapoxetine can lower blood pressure when you stand up and may cause fainting. Drink enough water and avoid taking it when dehydrated. Avoid alcohol. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you. Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy, a bleeding problem, glaucoma, depression or another mental health condition, or low blood pressure. A doctor should check your heart and blood pressure before you start.
Overdose
Too much may cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fainting, drowsiness or a fast heartbeat. Seek medical help promptly.
