Indications

Dasamularista (Dashmularishta) is a classical Ayurvedic liquid tonic made from the roots of ten plants (Dashmula) together with other herbs, fermented with jaggery or sugar. It is traditionally given to women after childbirth to help recovery, regain strength and support the uterus, and for general weakness, poor appetite, body aches, menstrual discomfort and mild breathing complaints. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited.

How It Works

The root herbs are traditionally considered warming, pain relieving and strengthening. Several of them have shown mild anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in laboratory studies. During natural fermentation the tonic develops a small amount of alcohol, which helps extract and preserve the herbal compounds.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic practitioner. It is commonly taken after meals, mixed with an equal amount of water, once or twice daily. Shake well before use and use the measuring cup provided.

Interactions

It naturally contains alcohol, so do not take it with Metronidazole, Tinidazole or other medicines that react with alcohol, and avoid it with sedatives. It also contains sugar, which can affect blood sugar control in diabetes. Tell your doctor about other medicines you take.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to any ingredient.
  • People who must avoid alcohol, including those with liver disease or alcohol dependence.
  • Uncontrolled diabetes, unless a doctor agrees.
  • Pregnancy and young children.

Side Effects

Most people tolerate it well. Some may have heartburn, a burning feeling in the stomach, nausea, loose stools or drowsiness from the alcohol content.

Get urgent medical help if you notice heavy bleeding after childbirth, high fever, severe abdominal pain, yellow eyes or skin, or signs of allergy such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Do not use during pregnancy. It is traditionally used after delivery, but because it contains alcohol and herbs that may pass into breast milk, breastfeeding mothers should use it only on the advice of a doctor or registered practitioner, at the lowest dose and for a short time.

Precautions and Warnings

Use with caution if you have stomach ulcers or acidity. People with diabetes should check blood sugar. Do not drive if it makes you drowsy. Any bleeding, fever or pain after childbirth needs a proper medical check and should not be treated with a tonic alone.

Overdose

Taking too much can cause stomach irritation, drowsiness and signs of alcohol intoxication, especially in children. Seek medical help if a large amount is swallowed.

Therapeutic Class

Ayurvedic herbal preparation (fermented tonic, arishta).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the bottle tightly closed. A slight sediment is normal.
