Indications

Dequalinium Chloride vaginal tablets are used to treat bacterial vaginosis, a common imbalance of the normal vaginal bacteria that causes a thin grey or white discharge with a fishy smell. It may also be used for some other vaginal infections caused by bacteria, Candida (yeast) or Trichomonas, when the doctor advises.

How It Works

Dequalinium Chloride is an antiseptic. Its molecules carry a positive charge and attach to the outer walls of bacteria and fungi, making them leaky and stopping their energy production, so the germs die. It acts locally in the vagina, with very little absorbed into the body.

Dosage and Administration

Usual adult dose: one 10 mg vaginal tablet inserted deep into the vagina once a day at bedtime for 6 days. Lie on your back with knees slightly bent to insert it. Complete the full 6 days even if symptoms improve sooner. Treatment can be paused during menstruation and continued afterwards. Not for use by girls who have not yet had their first period.

Interactions

  • Soaps, spermicides and vaginal douches may reduce its effect; avoid them during treatment.
  • It may damage latex condoms and diaphragms; use another method or avoid intercourse during treatment.
  • No important interactions with medicines taken by mouth are known.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to Dequalinium Chloride or any ingredient.
  • Ulcers or open sores of the vagina or cervix.
  • Girls before their first period.

Side Effects

Common: vaginal discharge, itching, burning or irritation, and vaginal yeast infection (thrush). Less common: headache, nausea and small amounts of vaginal bleeding. Undissolved pieces of tablet may sometimes appear on underwear.

Get urgent medical help for severe vaginal pain or bleeding, swelling of the face or throat, rash with difficulty breathing, or fever with lower belly pain.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Very little is absorbed into the blood, and it has been used in pregnancy when needed, but use only on a doctor’s advice, especially in the first months. It can be used while breastfeeding on medical advice.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Insert deep into the vagina; if the vagina is very dry, the tablet may not dissolve, so ask your doctor.
  • See a doctor if symptoms continue after treatment or keep coming back.
  • Do not use for more than 6 days without medical advice, as it may irritate the lining.

Overdose

Using more tablets than advised can irritate or ulcerate the vaginal lining. Rinse the vagina with water if needed and seek medical advice. Accidental swallowing by a child: seek medical advice.

Therapeutic Class

Vaginal antiseptic and anti-infective (quaternary ammonium compound).

Storage
