Indications
Difamilast is a non-steroid ointment used to treat atopic dermatitis (eczema), a long-lasting skin condition that causes dry, itchy, red and inflamed patches. The 1% strength is used in adults, and the 0.3% strength is used in children (usually from 2 years of age) and may also be used in adults as directed.
How It Works
Difamilast belongs to a group called phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) inhibitors. PDE4 is an enzyme inside immune and skin cells that helps switch on inflammation. By blocking it, Difamilast raises a calming messenger (cyclic AMP) inside these cells, which reduces the release of inflammatory substances. This eases itching, redness and swelling of the skin without using a steroid.
Dosage and Administration
Use as prescribed by your doctor. The usual way is to apply a thin layer to the affected skin twice a day. Wash and dry your hands before and after use (unless the hands are being treated). Do not apply to the eyes, inside the mouth or nose, or on broken, infected skin. Do not cover with tight dressings unless your doctor advises it. Keep using it for as long as your doctor recommends, and continue your usual moisturiser.
Interactions
Very little Difamilast enters the blood, so interactions with medicines taken by mouth are unlikely. Avoid applying other skin products to the same area at the same time unless your doctor advises it. Tell your doctor about all the creams and medicines you use.
Contraindications
- Allergy to Difamilast or any ingredient of the ointment.
Side Effects
Side effects are usually mild and occur where the ointment is applied. They may include itching, irritation, redness, a burning feeling, small infected hair follicles (folliculitis), acne-like spots, skin darkening or contact dermatitis (a skin reaction to the product).
Get urgent medical help if you develop a spreading rash, severe swelling, blistering, swelling of the face or lips, or difficulty breathing. Stop using it and see your doctor if the skin becomes more painful or shows signs of infection such as pus or crusting.
Pregnancy and Lactation
There is little information on use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Use only if your doctor thinks the benefit outweighs any possible risk. If breastfeeding, do not apply it to the breast area, so the baby does not swallow any.
Precautions and Warnings
- For use on the skin only.
- Do not use on skin with an active bacterial, fungal or viral infection until it is treated.
- Use the correct strength for age; the stronger ointment is meant for adults.
- If there is no improvement after several weeks, return to your doctor.
Overdose
Using too much on the skin is unlikely to cause serious harm but may increase local irritation; wipe off the excess. If the ointment is swallowed, rinse the mouth and contact a doctor or poison centre for advice.
