Indications

Ectoine is a natural protective substance used in eye drops, nasal sprays, throat products and skin care. In eye drops, often combined with Sodium Hyaluronate, it is used to relieve dry, tired, burning or irritated eyes, including dryness linked to screen use, air conditioning, contact lenses or mild allergy. In other products it is used to soothe allergic or dry nasal symptoms and dry, sensitive or irritated skin.

How It Works

Ectoine is made by microorganisms that live in harsh conditions such as salt lakes, where it protects their cells from drying out and heat. On the eye or other surfaces it binds water and forms a stable protective film over cell membranes. This helps keep the surface moist, stabilises the tear film and reduces irritation and inflammation caused by dryness, allergens or the environment. It does not contain a drug that acts inside the body.

Dosage and Administration

Use as directed on the label. For eye drops, the usual use is 1 drop in each affected eye about 3 times a day, or more often if needed. Wash your hands, tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid and place a drop without touching the eye with the tip. Many ectoine eye drops are preservative-free and can be used with contact lenses; check the pack. For nasal or skin products, follow the label directions.

Interactions

No significant interactions are known. If you use other eye drops or ointments, leave at least 5 minutes between different eye products and apply ointments last.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are allergic to Ectoine or any other ingredient of the product.

Side Effects

Side effects are uncommon. Some people notice brief stinging, burning, blurred vision or a sticky feeling just after use. Rarely, redness or itching from allergy may occur.

Stop using it and get urgent medical help if you have eye pain, a sudden change in vision, severe redness, swelling of the eyelids or face, or difficulty breathing. Also see a doctor if your symptoms get worse or do not improve within a few days.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Ectoine acts on the surface and is not expected to reach the baby, so it is generally considered suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if unsure.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Do not touch the eye, fingers or any surface with the dropper tip, to avoid contamination.
  • Use within the time stated on the pack after first opening.
  • Wait until vision is clear before driving.
  • See an eye doctor for eye pain, light sensitivity, discharge or vision changes, as these may signal infection or another eye disease.
