Indications

Edible Pine refers to the edible seeds (pine nuts) of certain pine trees, known in Unani medicine as Chilgoza or Habb-ul-Sanobar. In Unani practice it is used as an ingredient in compound preparations such as majoons (semi-solid herbal pastes) that are traditionally taken as general tonics, to support strength and energy, and for weakness of the nerves and digestion. Scientific evidence for these traditional uses is limited.

How It Works

Pine nuts are rich in healthy fats, protein, vitamin E, magnesium and zinc. In Unani theory they are considered warming and nourishing. Any benefit in a compound product is thought to come from the combined effect of all its herbal ingredients rather than from pine nut alone.

Dosage and Administration

Use only as directed on the label of the specific product or by a registered Unani practitioner. Compound majoons are usually taken by mouth once or twice daily, often with milk or water. Do not take more than the recommended amount.

Interactions

No important drug interactions are known for pine nut itself. However, compound Unani products contain several herbs, so tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and supplements you use, especially medicines for diabetes, blood pressure or blood thinning.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to pine nuts or other tree nuts.
  • Allergy to any other ingredient in the product.

Side Effects

Pine nuts are generally well tolerated as food. Some people have a temporary bitter or metallic taste lasting a few days after eating them (often called “pine mouth”). Majoon preparations are sweet and may cause stomach upset or raise blood sugar in people with diabetes. Allergic reactions such as itching, rash or swelling can occur.

Get urgent medical help if you notice swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or a widespread rash.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Pine nuts eaten as food are considered safe. The safety of compound herbal products in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established, so use them only on the advice of a doctor.

Precautions and Warnings

  • People with diabetes should note the high sugar content of majoons.
  • Not a substitute for proper medical diagnosis and treatment.
  • Use in children only on a practitioner’s advice.
  • Buy only from reliable sources and check the expiry date.

Overdose

Taking too much may cause stomach discomfort, nausea or loose stools. Stop the product and seek medical advice if symptoms are troublesome.
