Indications
Enzacamene (also called 4-methylbenzylidene camphor or 4-MBC) is a sunscreen ingredient. It is used in some sunscreens, moisturisers and cosmetics to help protect the skin from sunburn caused by ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. It is usually combined with other UV filters to give broader protection.
How It Works
Enzacamene is a chemical UV filter based on camphor. It absorbs UVB light before it can damage the skin cells and converts it into a small amount of harmless heat. It does not protect well against UVA rays, so it is used together with UVA filters.
Dosage and Administration
For external use only. Apply the product generously and evenly to exposed skin before sun exposure and reapply at least every 2 hours and after swimming, sweating or towel drying, or as directed on the label.
Interactions
- No important interactions with medicines are known.
- Medicines that make the skin sensitive to light (such as Doxycycline or Isotretinoin) increase the need for good sun protection.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to Enzacamene or any ingredient of the product.
- Not for use on broken or irritated skin.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Some people may have skin irritation, redness, itching or an allergic or light-related rash. It may sting if it gets into the eyes.
Get urgent medical help if there is a severe rash, blistering, swelling of the face or difficulty breathing after use.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Small amounts can pass through the skin, and laboratory studies have raised questions about weak hormone-like effects. During pregnancy and breastfeeding many people prefer mineral sunscreens (Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide); discuss with a doctor if unsure.
Precautions and Warnings
- Some regulators have restricted or banned this ingredient because of concerns about possible hormone-like effects, and it is not approved in the USA; follow local product rules.
- Sunscreen is only one part of sun protection; use shade, hats and clothing too.
- Not recommended for babies under 6 months.
- Avoid contact with the eyes.
Overdose
Overuse on the skin is unlikely to cause harm beyond irritation. If swallowed in a large amount, it may cause stomach upset; seek medical advice.
